The Saucey Secret To Finishing Out The Year Strong

(Total read time: 6 minutes)

THE APPETIZER

If you are reading this, I am currently on a plane headed to my favorite place in the world and hopefully my new home sooner than later. Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. One of the few places in the world that remains untouched by the modern day social problems that distract us from what really matters… And just happens to be where I fell in love with my better half. 😘 (Let’s hope shes’ reading this.)

Hard recommendation: You should probably come visit me. You never know… you might luck out as well.

Now….. Sit back, relax, and remember to please enjoy my sauce.

Oh yeah… and PURA VIDA 🤙

PAT’S SNAPPLE CAP

If you pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays…. Then when your life is over, you’ll be empty and filled with no tomorrows.

- Meredith Willson, The Music Man

FUN FACT: 60% of the US makes New Years Resolutions. 80% of them fail by the 2nd week of February. Idk about you, but that sounds like a shitty way to kick off the year.

CHART: Oh you thought I was done? Nope, still driving the point home. Helping you out with a visual just in case the point hasn’t been made yet. How do you stack up against the average? That’s for you to decide.

THE MAIN COURSE

Making Goals That Actually Matter.

If you work for someone, you're probably given some metric of success measure against to get the: “Hey you’re doing a great job.”

If you work for yourself, you make up some idea of metrics for success to be able to tell yourself: “Hey I I am doing a great job.”

If you are like me, and you have Venture Capitalists breathing down your neck, you have metrics and always hear: “Hey, you need to be doing more.”

Candidly, we all know we could be doing more, and out of all of the above…. I don’t actually know which is the best option.

However, the real question we should be asking ourselves is:

What goals actually matter?

Well, you cannot manage anything that is not measured. So in other words, unless you are measuring yourself against a set of goals, you essentially, are flat out un-hinged.

So as we head into the new year what are you measuring?

  • Professional goals?

  • Personal goals?

  • Feel good goals?

  • Both?

There is no right or wrong, it all depends on what is most important to you for the coming year, or in other words, measuring what matters… TO YOU.

How do you figure that out?

Well here are some easy lay-ups to help you help yourself:

  • Is my professional self flourishing right now?

  • Is the work I am doing fulfilling? Does it challenge and excite me?

  • Am I fulfilled in my work, the company I am at, the people I am working with?

Your lay-up 🫱: If the answer to any of those is NO, then there yah go. EZ goal to add to your list.

What about your personal life?

  • Do I surround myself with people that make me a better person?

  • Do I feel secure in my relationships?

  • Am I the best version of myself and being all that I can be?

Another lay-up 🫱🫱: If the answer to any of those is NO, then you can count that as 2 to add to the list.

OK LOOK - I get it, these are those theoretical questions that lead most of us to what I call both in the professional and personal worlds: “Ideation Paralysis”

(aka - My personal hell.)

But it’s a starting point….A starting point to help map the steps you need to take to check the box on the goal.

The problem is, people with their “New Years Resolutions” commit to the small things and still fail. They try to then correlate those small things to the big things without examining why they are doing them in the first place.

Hence the 80% failure rate.

If you don’t know why you are doing something, there is no motivation behind it. Therefore, you will most likely fail. Speaking from experience and the data itself.

For WHY and for WHAT?

Come with me on a trip to Santa Teresa, Costa Rica for a moment if you will…..

(I promise this is worth the read)

On the very last day of the first trip I ever took there in 2022, I was sitting at breakfast with a new friend who was younger than I, from Israel, and was curious why I spent so much time worrying and stressing and slaving over work.

Before this conversation, I was as headstrong as can be of a future vision of myself decorated in accolades, more money than I could count, and having anything that I wanted.

When I explained to him my goals in an over-the-top way as I typically do, he asked me something that left me in one of those rare moments where I truly had no response.

He simply asked: (Excuse the broken English)

“For why, and for what you do this?”

“For WHY do you think you have to do all of this to have what you want? For what do you want this? This I do not understand my friend…”

A long moment of me trying to justify my beliefs, another moment of me questioning everything, and then my extremely intelligent response………

Man…. I actually don’t really know? <- Intelligent Quote By Patrick Frank 💁🏻‍♂️

Why am I telling you this?

It’s because the moment I started asking myself:

For WHY am I doing something, and for WHAT will it result in?

☝🏻 This is a core memory and the moment my life started getting better.

SOoOoO before you go make your New Years Resolution:

Think about why you are making it in the first place. What are things you actually want to change in your life… What will that result in? Who is that person after that change happens?

Or you can just try out this little life hack I developed for myself:

Stop making false promises to yourself. Measure what matters, and go make some awesome things happen in your life. 🥂

THE SAUCE

What you have all been waiting for:

Most of you might be surprised this was not the first feature in Patty’s Picks but I couldn’t be that predictable. Let me introduce you to my death row meal (The last meal I would ever have in my life) and San Diego’s best hidden gem:

Maritza’s Mexican Food.

Why?

It might be because a good chunk of my childhood was spent in this restaurant. It could be because it is lost in time that only a true family run hole in the wall Mexican restaurant that is cash only can be, perhaps it is the fact that they remember all of the customers names, their lives, and treat you like family everytime….. or it just might be the fact that the food is so damn fucking good.

In a strip mall in Clairemont about ¼ mile from my childhood home, Maritzas is nestled in between a children's dance studio and a laundry mat. It is run by the Mother:  Carmen. Her husband & main chef. His brother also chef.  Her daughter. And her grand daughter. So when I say it feels like you are having a family dinner prepared by your Mexican relatives, it doesn’t get more accurate than that.

The menu is checker boarded with plastic letters, they only take cash, and their menu has never changed. In my world, if I am having my worst of days or my best of days, this is my go-to EVERY TIME.

Now, I know we are in San Diego, and everyone has their own version of this…But do yourself a favor and go here. Argue with me later.

Patty’s Go To:

The C-Special, with an added hard shell chicken taco, a quesadilla, and a side of enchilada sauce. You will be full.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Rolled Tacos: They go way too hard. Be sure to add the pound of guac.

  • Wednesday Carnitas: Only on Wednesdays

  • The Churro: I swear they bring these in from Disneyland.

Patty Hack: ☝️

If you go in there and try and order a California Burrito or Carne Asada Fries…. They will simply ask you to leave. Candidly, you just ain’t in the right place and don’t embarrass me and yourself like that.
