Crafting Your Personal Playbook for the Year Ahead

Let me guess? New year, new you? Cool, see you in February for a check-in to see how those goals are coming along. Do yourself a favor and don’t be the 1-month gym specialist or the purchase a planner recycler and actually think about what is head.

But hey, I ain’t not guilty when it comes to this….but that was college and this is now… and we are adults so get it let’s get it together. If that isn’t enough to slow yourself down and actually think about the goals you are setting…. Maybe this line will help: The lies we tell ourselves become the false promises people remember us by. 

So… what can you do? Well I may not know all the answers but I can at least tell you how I shifted my mental framework to solve this problem years ago and set a simple goal that led to accomplishing the other ones I had planned for the future. 

Enter: Your “Lines Of Life”

If you have ever been around me for an extended period of time, you have most likely heard me drop one if not several of these listed below. But I have never explained why they are so important and the reason they actually exist. 

The problem is setting goals without a foundation is saying I want to build a skyscraper in quicksand. Newsflash: It doesn't go so well. 

So what are they? They are more than just fancy quotes to say in a social setting to make yourself sound smart. They are actually a personal playbook of core principles that guide decision making on a day to day basis, they are the non-negotiables that steer my choices, actions, and reactions. When the pressure's on and the noise ramps up, these lines cut through the clutter and keep me aligned with who I am and where I'm headed.

Why am I telling you this?

Because having these guiding lines has been a game-changer. They've become my internal compass, a logic tree for decision-making that frees me to act authentically without second-guessing every move. In a world that's constantly trying to pull you off course, they keep me grounded.

So without further adieu, here they are: 

Pat’s Lines of Life:

1. A lot of people are a lot of talk; few are up for the moment.
   Most people talk a lot, over commit,, and feed into group think, but when it's game time, most are nowhere to be found. I choose to be the one who shows up when it counts. Your word is your bond and every time you break it, people notice. 

2. Everyone has an opinion until it affects them.
   Everyone loves to share their google search opinions on ideas and topics they are emotional about. An opinion is the easiest thing to share, and even easier to talk the big talk with. Whether political, relationship advice, or social matters, it doesn’t matter who you are, you got an opinion to share. However, opinions without action are just words. Challenge people to place themselves in the scenario their opinion covers and watch their stance change like the wind. It is easy to be a spectator, it is hard to be in the arena. 

3. If you're asking for something from someone, make sure you're giving it first.
   Reciprocity isn't optional—it's essential. You cannot set expectations of others if you are not willing to stand by the same expectations. If you don’t you are just simply the finest form of a hypocrite. Always ask for what you are able to give, never more. 

4. Always choose the right hard, not the easy one.
   The path of least resistance leads to the least beneficial outcome. Opt to challenge yourself to embrace the process as it leads to far more character development then the easy path. No one is watching a movie or reading a book about someone who went down easy street. 

If you're going to cast a stone, make sure you're standing at eye level.
Before criticizing, make sure you understand your opponent beyond the window you are looking through. Cast a stone at someone who has done far more than you in life, and you will find very quickly they will roll a boulder down their mountain of accomplishments to hit you. 

So here's the challenge:

Take a moment to think deeply about the principles that truly matter to you—the ones that will guide your decisions when things get tough. Write them down. Own them. Then go set your goals or even better, set the single goal of staying true and living by them.

Why?

The unknown hidden gem in Pacific Beach that somehow has still remained under the radar. Time to end that streak. Oltre Mare is as authentic as it gets. This is not your average fufu italian joint, this is not fake authentic, this is not hype this is the REAL DEAL. Sweetbug and her husband run this literally out of the back of their house and deliver it right to you in what is basically their living room. All fresh, and all italian natives… Like seriously, their family gets temp visas and works there over the Summer. The pasta is actually handmade unlike many places that claim it to be, and you won't be leaving like shit as you do with most big Italian dinners. Best Part: It is one of the few places in San Diego that is not Koren that is BYOB…. So get your wine fridge ready. 

The Go To:

For 2: 1 Pasta 1 Pizza and you are good to go. I love bolognese so when the wild boar bolognese shows up on a menu you know it is coming down on the table. The pizza - If it has prosciutto on it - It is a YES CHEF. The Pizza Crudo e Rucola is the go to. 

For 4: 2 pasta’s 1 Pizza and if you are hungry - Get the whole fish. For the additional pasta (Assuming you went with what I recommended above) go for the Pappardelle ai funghi Porcini.

• Patty Hack: She’s got specials on the weekend which she will most likely demand you to order and you should just submit and listen because SweetBug is always right. 

Tell her I sent yah and she will give yah a big ol hug that only a true Italian mother can give!
