PAT’S SNAPPLE CAP
"If you were given a business idea, a talent, the idea for a book or a script, or a service… You were blessed with that, and that is something you were given so you could give it to the world. Don’t let the world down, but most of all, don’t let your future self down. That is called regret.”
Everyone is given an idea or talent for something. What is the worst that can happen if you chose to share it with the world? What are you waiting for?

THE MAIN COURSE
Why You Need A Side Hustle & Why It’s Not Just About The $$
Let me start by dropping an unpopular opinion: The best reason to start a side hustle isn’t the money. Call me crazy, but first hear me out. I doubt there are any of you that are sitting at your job and it is 100% in line with your dream of what you want to be doing in life… If you are congrats you don’t need to read any more.
The point of a side hustle is to bring your passion and what you love to do, what your talents are to life… In hopes that one day, it will become your main occupation.
The fact is, if you start a side hustle just for the money, you will lose. Someone who cares more about the same problem you are trying to solve, or sells the same thing as you will do it better and work harder at it.
Here’s the kicker though: The real ROI of a side hustle isn’t measured in dollars, it’s measured in freedom, purpose, tax advantages (Yes, Uncle Sam can actually be your friend), and in figuring out what you actually love doing before the opportunity is gone and you’re listening to Brad Pitt from Troy say:

Here’s why I genuinely think everyone needs a side hustle:
Life Gets Way More Exciting: You finally have something to look forward to every morning.
You Instantly Become More Interesting: Skip the small talk at dinner parties, you’ve got something real to share.
You Learn to Own Your Outcomes: Running your own show forces you to sharpen your decision-making and problem-solving skills, which, spoiler alert, makes you way better at your day job too.
You Become Scrappy: Resourcefulness isn't taught; it’s learned when you’re figuring stuff out on your own dime.
It’s Your Ticket to Freedom (Eventually): Sure, your side hustle starts small, but every successful entrepreneur you admire started somewhere.
AND MY PERSONAL FAVORITE: You’ll quickly learn that the tax code was built for entrepreneurs….Not W2 employees. Or in other words… you’ll hopefully never be paying taxes again.
BUT WHERE DO I EVEN START?
Great question. A lot of people say starting is the hardest part… The good news is, that's just simply not true.
Starting is the easy part. Consistency is the hard part. But let’s start at the start.
Before you dive in be sure you are diving into the right thing:
Stop and ask yourself:
Is this a problem I genuinely want to solve?
(Will solving this make your life easier too?)
Is this something that gets me excited? (
Like "stay up until you fall asleep on your computer excited”)
Is this something I could talk about to a complete stranger for hours
(Without them running away)
Is this something that won’t feel like work?
(Would you still enjoy it even if you weren’t getting paid right now?
If you have an idea: Great, hard part done. Now it’s time to:
If product/service based: List your products/services on sites like etsy, fiverr, or gumroad.
Bonus - You should make a personal site! (Caard, Unicorn Platform, Shopify)
If software based: Use Loveable or Replit or Base44 to start coding up your app idea. You can build micro software and apps now in 30min and it is as simple as having a conversation with someone about what you want. (WILD!)
Validate if people actually want your idea.
Talk to potential customers.
Run a small ad campaign with boosted posts on Meta or TikTok.
Make flyers or brochures and pass them out at local events or businesses.
If you don’t have an idea: No problem. I’ve curated a list of over 1,000 micro-SaaS ideas if you’re looking to go the tech route, and over 150 side hustle ideas if you’re thinking more service-based. Then just follow the steps above!
You can find them both in the Business In A Box Archive.
Use code SAUCE and it’ll only cost yah $1.
NOW TO THE SECRET SAUCE OF SIDE HUSTLES: STOP PAYING TAXES.
Look, I'm not your CPA and after speaking with my legal counsel, I have to put the disclosure in that “This is NOT financial advice”... Now that, that part is over….I'm about to give you the juiciest tax tip you'll ever get from a newsletter:
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻The U.S. tax code was written for business owners, not W2 employees.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Here's what that actually means for you:
1. Write-Offs Become Your New Best Friend
When you run a side hustle, your life becomes a tax write-off…. (At least most of it does)
Here's the quick & dirty breakdown:
Everyday Expenses = Write-Offs
Home Office: Rent, utilities, Wi-Fi, repairs—all partially deductible.
Vehicle: Deduct mileage ($0.67/mile) or vehicle expenses (maintenance, gas, insurance if its a “company car”
Meals & Entertainment: Deduct around 50% of networking coffees, dinners, happy hours….Dates….Just mention something about business and save the receipt.
Phone & Internet: Deduct it. You need it to run your business.
Travel & Lifestyle
Flights, hotels, rental cars fully deductible if business is part of the trip…. Which it always can be if you’re running it.
Conferences, client visits, market research trips. Yup they all count.
Boosted Retirement Accounts
Solo 401(k): Contribute up to $66,000/year (2024), reducing taxable income significantly.
SEP IRA: Contribute up to 25% of business income (max $66k), lowering taxable income.
Health Insurance Deductions
Self-employed? Deduct your health insurance premiums directly.
Qualified Business Income Deduction (QBI)
Deduct an extra 20% off net business income. (E.g., $20k profit → pay tax on just $16k).
What’s the Catch?
No catch, but here's the truth:
Keep detailed records of everything. Use QuickBooks, Xero, or Freshbooks to make life easy.
Don't get greedy. Keep expenses legit, relevant, and reasonable.
Hire a CPA or tax pro at least the first year, to learn the ropes.
